Meet Arash Akmal, Pharm.D Doctor of Pharmacy from The University of Southern California ( USC )

Despite his youth, Dr. Arash Akmal has a dedication to both the field of the pharmaceuticals and the Persian community that is commendable and impressive. This month Jaam-va-Jaan magazine would like to acknowledge Dr. Arash Akmal and his extensive work to reach out to the Iranian community.

At the age of seven, Dr. Arash Akmal’s along with his family made the painful decision to leave his native country Iran which was under the unpredictable cloud of war and strict government sanctions to have the opportunity of a better education. He completed his first years of study in France where he earned his French Baccalaureate diploma. He then moved to the United States of America in order to continue his studies in the field of Biology and earned his Bachelor’s of Science from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). During his undergraduate years Dr. Akmal was Awarded Leadership Scholarship for three consecutive years and earned the most prestigious scholarship (University of California, Irvine Regent’s Scholarship).

Before entering pharmacy school Dr Akmal worked as a clinical research assistant for the biopharmaceutical company Allergan in Irvine, California.

Dr. Arash Akmal  then earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2006. He has been serving the Southern California and surrounding area as a community Pharmacist for 7 years. He is certified in immunizations for adults and has extensive experience and post-graduate training in the compounding of prescription medications. Dr. Akmal’s focus is to provide caring, informative, and professional service to the patients of the pharmacy. Dr. Akmal is also actively involved with professional organizations, including The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and The American Pharmacists Association (APA).

Dr. Akmal’s research interests are pharmacogenomics and warfarin therapy, interprofessional education, health literacy, and physical assessment education for pharmacy. He practiced pharmacogenomic-based anticoagulation and research at the University of Southern California.

His pharmacy experience includes practice in community, long term care and hospital settings. After seven years of practice in community pharmacy, Dr. Akmal’s vision for pharmacy has substantially changed. He emphasizes that a pharmacist needs to interact more often with his patients and offer them the personal care they deserve.

Dr. Akmal also earned various awards for his excellent patient care and customer service at CVS and Rite Aid where he practiced pharmacy for several years.

Chain store pharmacies can’t match the personal service and speed of providing patients with a lot more than medication. That is why Dr. Akmal has decided to create an environment where patients will be welcomed by caring professionals readily available with answers and information regarding medication questions. He has decided to put the experience he has acquired at the service of the Persian community since he speaks their language and can educate them on the proper way of taking their medications.

At his newly opened pharmacy called Pars Pharmacy patients will receive the personal attention they deserve. They will also find a large selection of over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements. They can also enjoy free prescription delivery and mail-order services. Other services offered include blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings.

The professionalism of Pars Pharmacy goes beyond preparing prescriptions.

Dr. Akmal will explain medications for you and provide written information in English and Farsi and inform you on how to use them safely and effectively. He will also answer any questions patients may have about compatibility with their current medications and discuss possible side effects.

Other services offered by Dr. Akmal include assisting patients in selecting over-the-counter products on any products in the health and beauty section, offering immunization services for flu, tetanus, shingles and other conditions for adults on a walk-in or appointment basis. And all these services are done with total confidentiality.

Jaam-va-Jaan would like to thank Dr. Akmal for all the hard work he has put in to contribute to the Iranian community in such practical and astounding ways.
